The “Get Published” Workshop is offered by Enlightened Enterprise Media, an author platform that provides a one-stop-shop multi-media publishing solution to members of the Enlightened Enterprise Academy. We offer complete suite of services from advice to design, to production and delivery - in print, audio, and visual formats.
We have helped several authors get their books published, by working with them on the strategy, concept development, title and subtitle decisions, proposal writing, pitching to and negotiating with publishers, design, editing, proof reading, book launches, promotion, and sales and marketing. Also with related matters such as copywriting, trademarking, website design, podcast production etc.
That is a long list of tasks and makes the process of getting published look complicated and daunting perhaps? It certainly can be. And it most certainly is not an easy process. Much needs to be considered and it’s best considered before putting pen to paper or bashing the keyboard for weeks or months.
Because we have helped several authors get published, we know many of the common mistakes people make. And we are amazed by how many people are prepared to put huge amounts of time, money, and effort into getting published without having answered some very basic questions: “why am I doing this?” “Who am I trying to communicate with?” And “what do I want the reader to do when they have read what I publish?” These are just three of the many questions they need to know the answers to.
Often people have written the book before they consider who might publish it. If they are then successful in finding a publisher there’s every chance they will be advised to do a lot of time consuming and costly reworking of the manuscript. Self-publishing may avoid these problems but that comes with many other risks and challenges, especially for first-time self-publishers.
Finally, and most importantly, people that want to get published are usually thinking of publishing a book but, in the 21st century, people want to consume content in many different ways. And the ways they want their content vary greatly according to many factors that extend well beyond their age. It is important to consider what choices you should be giving them.
Getting published should be thought of as a design process. If done well much of the risk associated with getting published can be eliminated or reduced. Done right it is also possible to start to achieve the objectives associated with writing a book long before the book is ever published. And content produced earlier in the process can be tested and refined to improve the quality of the book that may be developed. This is best done in a series of well-structured steps. The earlier steps may also help generate pre-orders.
In summary, our advice is “never rush into writing a book. First consider whether a book is the best way of achieving your objectives in the short, medium, and longer-term. The time invested upfront, to address the questions and issues we have hinted at in this article, will always be time well spent.”
If you are thinking of writing a book, and If anything we have said makes sense to you, then you may wish to consider taking part in one of our “Get Published” workshops, run online and in person.
